Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner released a letter in response to the House Judiciary Committee’s request for information about his office’s sanctuary policies.   Krasner’s office sent the letter on Monday, May 18, 2026, the deadline for the official response. On May 4, 2026, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Chairman Tom McClintock (R-CA) sent letters to Krasner, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel and Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal. The letters demanded information on their offices’ sanctuary policies which Jordan and McClintock claimed “prioritize criminal and illegal aliens over American citizens and threaten public safety.” Jordan and McClintock accused Krasner’s office of undermining the rule of law “under the guise of safeguarding the public” and of giving “preferential treatment to illegal aliens based solely on their immigration status, even admitting that ‘low-level and nonviolent crimes should not lead to deportation or necessarily risk one’s immigration status.'” The letter also asked for documents regarding the district attorney’s office’s interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), policies regarding the prosecution of non-U.S. citizens, and more. Krasner initially responded to the letter on May 13, offering to testify publicly before the House Judiciary Committee. “I’m available next week, Chairman Jordan. How about the week after? We’ve got a lot of weeks before November, Chairman Jordan. Let’s go!” Krasner said at the time. Krasner also claimed Chairman Jordan’s letter accused his office of increasing crime. “We all know that is completely false,” Krasner said. Krasner’s letter on May 18 further denied the allegations in Chairman Jordan’s statement. “Your Letter’s requests also appear to be baseless, lacking in an accurate legal or factual foundation,” Krasner wrote. “Because neither of you is a barred attorney, the legal errors are unsurprising. The factual errors are also unsurprising given your histories of adhering to wholly repudiated, counterfactual and unscientific election denialism, climate change denialism and the like. Law matters. Facts matter.” Ultimately in his letter, however, Krasner requested more time to respond to all of Chairman Jordan’s allegations against his office. “That said, while I do not, and this letter is not intended to, concede the purported legislative purpose stated in your May 4 Letter, I must have appropriate time to address each of the allegations and requests contained therein,” Krasner wrote. “I am working quickly to retain counsel to assist in responding to your Letter and its requests.” Prior to the release of his letter on Monday, Krasner gave Chairman Jordan what he described as a “Philly” response. “Allow me to quote a Philly expression that you as an Ohioan may or may not know: PULL UP,” Krasner said back on May 13. The sheriff’s office had no comment to Chairman Jordan’s initial letter. The Philadelphia Police Department referred NBC10 to the city solicitor for a response. NBC10 is reaching out to the sheriff’s office and Philadelphia Police again in light of Krasner’s latest response.
