Primary elections loom in Wasatch County, and three candidates are vying for the Wasatch County sheriff’s seat. On May 27, The Wasatch Record and KPCW will host a candidate forum to help voters make their decision on who should take the helm at the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office.  Candi dates will answer questions about investigations into the Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement involvement in law enforcement actions, transparency, public trust, fiscal responsibility and the future of the law enforcement agency.  The Wasatch Record’s Wasatch County reporter Clara Hatcher and KPCW reporter Grace Doerfler will moderate the candidate forum.  All three candidates are Republicans. Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby is seeking reelection. Wasatch County’s Emergency Management Director Jeremy Hales and Summit County Sheriff’s Office detective Eric Mainord are also candidates in the race.  At the Wasatch County Republican Party nominating convention in April, delegates cast their votes in two rounds for the three candidates.  The first count found Rigby with 116 votes in his favor while Hales had 89 and Mainord had 44. Delegates voted for a second time because there was not a 60% vote in favor of any candidate and chose between the two highest vote getters, Rigby and Hales.  The second vote found Rigby with 115 ballots in his favor and Hales with 104.  But no candidate secured 60% of the vote after each round, so all three will appear on the GOP primary ballot on June 23. All three also met the signature-gathering threshold, which would have triggered a primary election regardless of whom delegates selected as a nominee.  Voters may learn more about the candidates at The Wasatch Record/KPCW forum on May 27. Candidates will answer questions from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wasatch County Senior Center.
