A former dance teacher accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl more than a decade ago pleaded not guilty Thursday during his arraignment in Vista. Ledarnay Fontenette Luckie, 39, is facing six counts involving alleged lewd or lascivious acts involving a minor between the ages of 14-15, accordi ng to prosecutors. During the hearing, prosecutors sought access to Luckie’s electronic devices, arguing he may have communicated with the alleged victim and possible witnesses through electronic means. “We know back in 2011 through 2013, this defendant was in communication with the victim, and potentially others, through his cell phone, through his electronic device,” Deputy District Attorney Claudia Plascencia said. “So, the people’s hope was to be able to have access to his electronic devices in the event he was attempting to contact the victim or potential witnesses.” Judge Brian Erickson denied the request, for now, after the defense attorney claimed Luckie had not been in contact with the alleged victim for years. Carlsbad police said the investigation began in December after a woman alleged she had been sexually abused by her dance instructor while she was a teenager. Police said two other former students, who are now adults, later came forward to allege other activities. Plascencia said no charges have been filed in those cases “at this stage.” According to police, the alleged abuse happened at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Academy. Luckie also previously taught at the now-closed DanceFX studio, in San Marcos, according to police and his stepfather, who was surprised to hear of the allegations. “It’s just not of his character to do that,” Luckie’s stepfather told NBC 7 shortly after Luckie’s arrest. The stepfather then questioned the validity of the claims. Employees at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Academy told NBC 7 the studio was under different ownership when Luckie worked there. According to jail records, Luckie was arrested two weeks ago. He was released after posting a $400,000 bond and remains out of custody. A readiness conference in the case was scheduled for late July. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office asked anyone with information related to the investigation to contact Carlsbad police.
