INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — 27-year-old Santino Ferrucci is making his 8th start in the Indianapolis 500, and he’s never finished outside the top-10.
The 2019 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year drives the No. 14 Chevrolet for A.J. Foyt Racing, and he feels good about sta
rting another May on the right track.
“I feel really good,” Ferrucci said. “The Chevrolet is really quick, a lot of pace. You know, seven top tens here. I’ve come close to winning this race a few times. Hopefully, this is our year. But I feel really good. We’re really far ahead of our program. Everything’s been going good so far, so smooth.”
Ferrucci’s best finish in the Indianapolis 500 came in 2023 when he finished in third. Ahead of this year’s 110th running of the Indy 500, Ferrucci was asked what it would take to walk away with a first-place finish.
“Probably a little bit of luck,” Ferrucci said. “Obviously, with the year we finished third, it’s tough to forget about those. There’s really nothing I could have done differently that would have changed the outcome of that race, even with the one last year. We were running really strong. We had a little bobble at the end. We came in behind Palou, and we didn’t end up finishing as strong as I would have liked. But this year, also with all the adversity we overcame in that race, if we have a smooth year, I don’t see why we can’t be back there again in the fight.”
Ferrucci’s sponsor is “Home for our Troops”, a non-profit organization that’s raised more than $15 million over the last four years to help veterans rebuild their lives. Ferrucci shared how purposeful it’s been to race for a sponsor that’s for a good cause.
“It’s an absolute honor to be working with Home for Our Troops,” Ferrucci said. “These guys are severely injured post 9/11 veterans that fought and sacrificed everything for our country. They’re the reason why we’re able to have this great race, all the freedoms that we have today. So just being out there, trying to raise awareness, raise money for these guys. You know, give them their lives back. It’s been a big deal, and having them in the garage, too, has been really special.”
The Indianapolis 500 is set for Sunday, May 24th.
