Dallas-based Southwest Airlines announced passengers cannot bring human- or animal-like robots in the cabin or as checked baggage, regardless of size or purpose. Recent incidents have gone viral online and caused delays on a flight out of Oakland. Southwest was initially stumped on how to han dle the robot, saying the item was essentially a carry-on and therefore could not be in a seat. Ultimately, they moved the robot from the aisle to the window, took out its battery and the plane went on to its destination. Southwest says the primary concern is the size of the lithium-ion batteries used to power the robots. Those batteries have previously caused fires, including one that prompted an emergency landing in San Diego.
