May 13, 2026
A semi-truck rollover near Camp Pendleton triggered a major traffic shutdown on southbound Interstate 5 early Wednesday morning, leaving commuters facing miles of delays.
The crash occurred near the Aliso Creek Rest Area. The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesd
ay after the big rig overturned, spilling debris — including dozens of what appeared to be FedEx boxes — across the roadway, according to the agency.
CHP officials said the big rig swerved across traffic lanes after traveling onto the right shoulder embankment and crashing into a guardrail. Two other vehicles then collided with the overturned truck.
The truck driver suffered major injuries that were not life-threatening and was airlifted to a hospital. The driver of a Honda CR-V sustained minor injuries after crashing into the semi and was also taken to a hospital, officials stated.
By 7:15 a.m., authorities had reopened all northbound lanes. However, the southbound side remained heavily impacted, with only two lanes open to traffic. The three right southbound lanes and the far-right northbound lane were closed to allow crews to clear the wreckage and cargo.
Caltrans and CHP officials advised motorists traveling through North County to expect significant delays throughout the morning commute and recommended using alternate routes.
