Mick Schumacher talks being compared to dad Michael ahead of first Indy 500
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Michael Schumacher is arguably the greatest driver in Formula 1 history. He’s won a record seven world championships and ranks second all time in number of wins.
His son Mick — who’s pre
paring for his first ever Indianapolis 500 — feels the pressure of the family name, but he’s not shying away from it.
“I love being compared to my dad,” Schumacher said. “You want to be compared to the best out there. Obviously, it’s a bit different here in IndyCar because there’s no real comparison since my dad didn’t do it, but it’s alright, the same as always — business as usual.”
Schumacher joined Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at the beginning of the 2026 season after following in his father’s footsteps by racing in F1.
His RLL teammate Graham Rahal personally knows what it’s like to grow up as the son of a driver. His father Bobby is a three-time CART champion and won the Indianapolis 500 in 1986.
He and Schumacher have bonded over their similar backgrounds.
“I can’t even fathom the pressure that somebody like Mick has. I mean, I know what I’ve lived with my whole life, and his is tenfold,” Rahal said. ” I think he handles it with grace and class. He goes out there every day to build his own name and reputation, and I love seeing him here in IndyCar.”
Another RLL teammate and two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Takuma Sato raced in Formula 1 with Michael in the early 2000s. Sato said Mick reminds him of his father.
“We love Mick. He’s such a down to earth guy,” Sato said. “I know his father as we going through (F1) at the same time. He’s Michael Schumacher – everybody’s hero. Seeing a second generation actually in a teammate driving together, it’s a phenomenal feeling.”
The Schumachers made their name on road and street courses. In fact, Michael won the United States Grand Prix five times on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
Now Mick has a chance to make his own Indy history — this time on the oval in the 110th running of the Indy 500.
“At the beginning we were like, ‘Okay, is it maybe easiest to maybe just do road courses and street courses to begin with?’ but then I was like, in my head, I was like, ‘Well, if you might move over here, we might as well do it fully.’ I’m very happy that I did decide to do that,” Mick said. “I’m excited for it. IndyCar has been so good to me. It’s a great championship… This is the big one. This is the one that we all want to do well in, and I think we have everything it takes to do that.”
Maybe even enough to be the first Schumacher to drink the famous milk.
