May 12, 2026
With the Preakness Stakes approaching, it’s time to look at the animals competing.
Many of the world’s fastest horses will compete at Laurel Park this year in the second leg of the Triple Crown, although it won’t include Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo.
There are a few horses that we
saw at Churchill Downs two weeks ago, but the group is mainly comprised of new contenders.
Here’s a look at the field for the 2026 Preakness:
How many horses are in the Preakness?
As of Tuesday, the 2026 Preakness is set to feature to 14 horses. That number could shrink, with scratches common in the days leading up to the race.

Iron Honor has the shortest odds to win the Preakness this year at 9-2 (as of Tuesday).
A 2026 Preakness win would be the second for jockey Flavien Prat (Rombauer in 2021), and the third for trainer Chad Brown (Cloud Computing in 2017 and Early Voting in 2022).
Behind Iron Honor is a tight field of contenders, with 5-1 odds listed for Taj Mahal, Chip Honcho and Incredibolt. Jockey Jose Ortiz, who rode Golden Tempo to the Kentucky Derby win, will be with Chip Honcho as he goes for his second Preakness victory.
