New tradition for Sonsio Grand Prix podium finishers at IMS? INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — There are plenty of traditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Race fans know all about them, whether it’s the Indy 500 winner drinking the milk or the kissing of the bricks at the start-finish line. But could there be a new tradition that was started this past weekend? Following the NTT IndyCar Series’ Sonsio Grand Prix on the IMS Road Course, the top three finishers of the race – Christian Lundgaard, David Malukas and Graham Rahal – celebrated in Victory Circle, per usual. But instead of spraying each other with the bottles of the champagne they received, they walked behind Victory Circle to spray the fans who had gathered to watch the celebration. “All credit goes to Rahal,” second-place finisher David Malukas said. “Rahal was the mastermind of that. He said, ‘Hey, let’s go spray the fans.’ And I said, ‘That’s a genius idea.’ So, (if a) new tradition’s started, I’m just glad I was part of the first one.” News 8 Sports caught the moment that Lundgaard, Malukas and Rahal celebrated with the fans: Christian Lundgaard, David Malukas, and Graham Rahal celebrate their podium finish at the Sonsio Grand Prix. pic.twitter.com/94CEjVb9yw— WISH-TV News (@WISHNews8) May 9, 2026 “It was the old dad over there – Graham – that was like, ‘Oh, let’s go behind and do it (celebrate) on the balcony,'” Sonsio Grand Prix winner Christian Lundgaard said. “I just kind of followed him.” Third-place finisher Graham Rahal told News 8 Sports’ Andrew Chernoff that he thought the celebration was “great.” “I told the guys up there, first off, I don’t need to smell like champagne right now,” Rahal said. “Second off, I don’t need my trophy to look like champagne. And third off, there’s a bunch of fans right here and there’s nobody out on the podium with us.” After the trio of drivers sprayed the fans with champagne, they took a selfie from the balcony with the fans in the background: The moment Rahal (left), Malukas and Lundgaard took a selfie following the Sonsio Grand Prix (Photo courtesy: Penske Entertainment / John Grainda) We shall see if next year’s podium finishers at the Sonsio Grand Prix follow suit and celebrate the same way with the fans. Lundgaard, Malukas and Rahal would love to celebrate again in Victory Circle at IMS in a couple weeks at the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500. ...read more read less
