A 1-year-old boy was killed and two other children were critically injured after a fire broke out at an apartment building in the Bronx, according to a source familiar with the matter. The flames erupted inside the apartment building on Bainbridge Avenue in the Fordham neighborhood just after 3:3 0 p.m. Monday, police said. An FDNY chief said firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy fire coming from a second-floor apartment. It was not immediately clear how the fire started. Flames rapidly spread up stairs to the top of the building. An infant boy was found dead, a source told NBC New York. Two children whose ages were not known were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition, police said. Three firefighters and two adults suffered injuries in the smoke and flames as well, the FDNY said at a press conference, but their injuries were not as serious.
