Warmer temperatures and sunshine returns before Mother’s Day rain chances move back into Kentucky
May 08, 2026
Chilly Start Gives Way to a Beautiful Friday
It was another cold start across Central and Eastern Kentucky Friday morning as many locations woke up to temperatures in the mid to upper 30s, with a few spots dipping into the low 40s. Some of the colder sheltered valleys even had the chance
to see patchy frost early this morning.
Despite the chilly beginning, sunshine quickly took over and helped temperatures rebound nicely throughout the afternoon. Winds out of the south are helping pull warmer air back into the region, allowing highs to climb back into the low 70s today.
Showers Return Late Tonight Into Saturday Morning
As we head into tonight, skies will remain mostly clear for much of the evening before our next weak weather system approaches from the northwest.
Late tonight into early Saturday morning, a weakening line of showers will move into the area. Rain coverage is expected to be scattered in nature, with the best chances across southern Indiana and northern Kentucky while farther south into central and southern Kentucky, rainfall will be much more isolated.
A few isolated rumbles of thunder cannot be ruled out overnight, but severe weather is not expected with this system. Rainfall totals will remain fairly light overall, generally around a tenth to a quarter inch in the northern parts of the viewing area with lesser amounts farther south.
Temperatures tonight will only fall back into the low 50s thanks to increasing cloud cover overnight.
Saturday Turns Dry and Mild by Afternoon
Saturday morning may start off with a few lingering showers, but conditions are expected to improve quickly as the system moves out of the region.
Clouds will gradually clear throughout the day, giving way to sunshine by the afternoon hours. Temperatures will warm back to near average for this time of year, with highs reaching the mid to upper 70s across much of the area.
Saturday evening and Saturday night are shaping up to be dry and pleasant with overnight lows settling into the 50s.
Mother’s Day Starts Dry Before More Showers Move In
Mother’s Day morning is looking fairly nice across the region with dry conditions and some sunshine to start the day.
However, another weather system will approach later Sunday afternoon and evening, bringing another round of showers and potentially a few isolated thunderstorms into the area. If you have outdoor plans for Mother’s Day later in the afternoon or evening, it would be a good idea to keep the rain gear nearby.
Right now, the severe weather threat appears limited, but a few stronger storms cannot be completely ruled out. Forecast models continue to show fairly weak instability, which should help limit storm intensity.
Cooler Air Returns Early Next Week
Behind Sunday night’s system, cooler and drier air will settle back into Kentucky to start next week.
Monday’s highs will only reach back into the 60s before temperatures gradually recover into the low to mid 70s by the middle of next week. Another round of scattered showers and storms could return by Wednesday as another disturbance moves through the Ohio Valley.
