Antioch plans task force to tackle illegal dumping
May 05, 2026
Antioch city leaders said they have a new plan to address illegal dumping, but some residents want more details before they’re convinced it will work.
Piles of trash can be seen along areas like Wilbur Avenue, where residents claim dumping has been a long-standing problem and a sign the city ha
sn’t done enough to prevent or clean it up.
City officials insist the new approach would bring multiple departments together as part of a task force focused on faster response and stronger enforcement.
The plan includes quicker removal of dumped materials, improved enforcement targeting repeat offenders and better coordination between community reports and the city’s response. Officials also said there will be enhanced tracking of dumping activity, though specific details have not been released.
Public messaging is also expected to be part of the effort.
Some residents said they’re encouraged by the proposal.
“That’s very exciting, because I’ve been talking about it for at least a decade,” said Antioch resident Beverly Knight.
Others remain skeptical.
“This task force, they’re all going to get together and they’re all going to talk,” said former Antioch resident Lori Cook. “And what’s going to happen? They’re going to kick the can again.”
Other cities, including Oakland, have tried new strategies such as using drones to track dumping patterns. It’s unclear if Antioch will adopt similar tactics.
