San Francisco Measure B: Lifetime term limits for mayor, supervisors
May 05, 2026
A measure on the ballot in San Francisco could change how long city leaders stay in power.
Measure B targets term limits for the mayor and board of supervisors. If passed, they would be limited to two consecutive four-year terms. Right now, they can serve two terms, step away for four years, and
then run again. The proposal needs a simple majority to pass.
“We want San Francisco to lead in good governance, and we want new voices to have a fair shot,” proponent Adrianna Zhang said. “It’s not fair when you have entrenched power — the fundraising, the networks. That creates an incumbency advantage.”
Zhang helped advance the measure alongside Supervisor Bilal Mahmood, who introduced it.

Opposition is loud and high-profile.
“I think it’s a horrible idea,” former Mayor Willie Brown said.
Opponents argue the change would have limited impact. Only one person, former Supervisor Aaron Peskin, has ever returned to office after a break. Opponents say voters already have the power to create turnover at the ballot box.
“You run somebody against the person holding the job and they get unelected,” Brown said. “You don’t eliminate a talented person by saying they can’t run again.”
Peskin said he has no plans to run again, regardless of what happens with Measure B.
