Sports in Brief: Update on the Wasatch High School spring sports teams

The Wasatch boys lacrosse team escaped with a narrow 11-9 win over Timpview Friday at home. The Wasps outscored their opponents in the first, second and third quarters, holding on in the fourth despite being outscored 4-2. Wasatch junior Sam King led the team with six points on two goals and four a
ssists in Friday’s win. The Wasps are 13-2 and will take on Springville Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the road in Wasatch’s second-to-last regular season game.
The Wasatch girls lacrosse team defeated Timpview 12-3 Friday on the road. Wasps junior Maggie Edmisten led the team in the win with four points on three goals and an assist. Wasatch is 10-7 and will face Springville at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at home in their regular season finale.
The Wasatch boys soccer team dominated Timpview 5-2 at home on Thursday. Tied heading into the game’s second half, the Wasps outscored their opponents 4-1 from there. Wasatch senior Ace Downey led the team in the win with three goals and an assist. The Wasps will take on Pleasant Grove at 7 p.m. on the road Tuesday in their regular season finale. The 5A classification playoffs will begin on Friday.
The Wasatch baseball team fell to Maple Mountain 16-2 at home on Friday in game one of the Wasps’ two-game final regular-season series. Wasatch found the scoreboard in the first and fourth innings, but Maple Mountain scored every inning, including a seven-run third inning. The game was called via mercy rule after the fifth inning. Wasps senior Royal Matthews hit a home run in Friday’s loss. Wasatch is 15-9 heading into Tuesday afternoon’s regular season finale against Maple Mountain, 3:30 p.m. on the road. As of Monday evening, the Wasps are ranked eighth in 5A, set to receive the final first-round playoff bye if their ranking holds. The 5A playoffs begin on Friday.
The Wasatch softball team defeated Bonneville 11-5 at home on Monday. Tied 3-3 heading into the third inning, the Wasps were powered by five and three-run third and fifth innings, respectively. Wasatch junior Oakley Lloyd led the team in the win with a home run and three RBIs. The Wasps will travel Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. to take on Spanish Fork in their regular season finale.
The Wasatch boys volleyball team took care of Springville 3-0 Tuesday on the road in their regular season finale. The Wasps won set one 25-18, set two 25-15 and set three 25-22. Wasatch are 22-1 and the top seeds in the 5A playoffs, which began on Friday. The Wasps received a first round bye and will face Skyline at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Utah Valley University.
The Wasatch boys tennis team took down Pleasant Grove 5-2 on the road Thursday in their regular season finale. Junior Carter Laird, senior Bryan Moore, senior David Despres, sophomore Luke Jones and junior Reed Berg, juniors Bryce Mills and Henry Miller each recorded wins for the Wasps at the one singles, two singles, four singles, one doubles and three doubles spots. Wasatch finished the regular season 13-8. The 5A state tournament will be held next Thursday and Saturday at the Liberty Park Tennis Center in Salt Lake City.
The Wasatch track and field team finished in 75th place on Saturday at the BYU Invitational. The Wasps girls team scored both of Wasatch’s two team points at the two-day meet. The Region 7 meet will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at Timpview High School.
