A classic spring pattern brings rain chances and changing temps
May 04, 2026
Showers increase early before a quieter afternoon
After a relatively quiet start, clusters of showers and a few thunderstorms begin to move into the region from the northwest. Early activity may struggle at first due to some dry air in place, but as the morning goes on, conditions become more fav
orable for steadier rain to reach the ground.
The best chance for rain through the first half of the day focuses on much of central Kentucky, while areas farther south may stay mostly dry.
As the day wears on, the main band of rain lifts north, leading to a drier and breezier afternoon. Southwest winds pick up with gusts approaching 30 mph, helping temperatures rebound into the upper 70s and low 80s.
It stays mild through the night, with temperatures only falling into the 50s.
Widespread rain and storms bring a soaking Tuesday into Wednesday
The most impactful part of the forecast arrives Tuesday into Tuesday night as a stronger system moves in. Showers become more widespread during the day, eventually transitioning into a more organized line of storms moving west to east overnight.
While severe weather is not the main concern, gusty winds can still occur with stronger storms. The bigger story looks to be rainfall, with many areas picking up between 1 and 2 inches, and some spots potentially seeing even higher totals.
That rain will be beneficial for drought conditions across much of Kentucky, especially in areas that have been running well below normal on rainfall.
Cooler air arrives midweek with lingering showers
A cold front pushes through by early Wednesday, bringing cooler air into the region. Showers may linger for a while, especially east of Interstate 65, before gradually tapering off later in the day.
Temperatures settle back into the 60s, offering a noticeable change from the recent warmth.
Unsettled pattern continues, but not a washout
The rest of the week into the weekend stays somewhat unsettled, with occasional chances for spotty showers as small disturbances pass through. That said, there will still be dry periods mixed in.
Friday currently looks like the best chance for a mainly dry day, while additional scattered rain chances return at times over the weekend. Temperatures moderate back toward the 70s, closer to typical early May levels.
Overall, it is a classic spring pattern with changing conditions, periods of rain, and a welcome boost in moisture for the region.
