Starting Monday, all voters across the Bay Area will get their ballot for California’s June primary. But in Congressional District 14, voters will get another ballot just days later for a special election happening two weeks after that primary. This all stems from a sudden vacancy after longtim e Congressman Eric Swalwell resigned following sexual assault allegations, shaking up local politics and triggering a rare special election. Alameda County Supervisor Daniel Haubert says the first ballot, arriving Monday, is for the June primary that will send the top two candidates to November to decide who holds the seat long term. “That will elect the long-term member of Congress,” Haubert said. The second ballot arriving just days later is for a special election two weeks after the primary. That vote will decide who fills the seat right away if someone gets more than 50%. If not, there could be a runoff later this summer. “People are confused about which election should they vote in? Does one nulify the other? Is one more important than the other? Why do we have two elections? Is the most common question,” Haubert said. Officials say the ballots will be different colors to help voters tell them apart.
