SAN RAMON, Calif. (KRON) — Pacific Gas and Electric Company unveiled new technology Friday aimed at preventing wildfires as California heads into peak fire season. The utility introduced its Continuous Monitoring Center in San Ramon, calling it a first-of-its-kind facility designed to identify pot
ential risks before they can lead to ignitions.
“When proactively identity risk, you can avoid outages,” said Craig Kurtz, senior director of continuous monitoring at PGE.

The center pulls in data from millions of sensors across PGE’s electric system, allowing engineers to track conditions around the clock and flag potential issues before they escalate.
PGE engineer Aakansha Bhatt said that real-time monitoring has already helped crews step in early.
“This rooms shows that we're actually doing something,” Bhatt said.
PGE says the effort reflects a broader shift from reacting to problems to predicting and preventing them. The announcement comes at the start of Wildfire Awareness Month, as fire agencies across the state prepare for the months ahead.
Officials with CAL FIRE say preparedness remains critical as conditions begin to dry out.
“It’s a situation, that people need to be prepared,” said Battalion Chief David Acuña.
PGE says technology like this could help reduce wildfire risk across California.
