The man believed to be behind the wheel of a pickup truck that plowed into a Newark laundromat, killing an 81-year-old woman inside and sending a worker to the hospital, has been caught, according to law enforcement. Aides Benites Rivera was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accid ent resulting in death, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday. The arrest stems from the chaotic scene from the strip mall on Irvington Avenue Monday afternoon. A preliminary investigation found that Rivera was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck when he struck an SUV, sending both crashing through the front of the Ivy Hill Laundromat, police said. A witness told NBC New York he saw the driver of the white truck drinking alcohol with another man in the parking before he crashed into the other car, sending glass and metal flying in every direction. About 10 people were inside the laundromat at the time of the crash. According to the prosecutor’s office, 81-year-old Ruth Benjamin was seated at a table near the entrance when the crash occurred. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A worker was sent flying back as a result of the crash. The extent of the worker’s injuries was not immediately clear, though she was rushed to the hospital. Attorney information for Rivera was not immediately available. ...read more read less
