CMS Board meeting over proposed $2.1 billion budget leads to tense exchange between Supt. and Board Chair

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Budget drama at Tuesday night’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board meeting. The board voted eight to one to reject Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill’s $2.1 billion budget proposal. Board members are asking her to come back with an amended budget in two weeks. The superintend
ent appeared caught off guard by the decision, saying she doesn’t know what changes they want.
Hill said, “Madam Chair, if the board is directing me to amend a $2.1 billion budget, I respectfully request what part of the $2.1 billion dollar budget should be amended?”
Board Chair Stephanie Sneed replied, “I understand that. And I’ve said to you, you will get further direction, it will not be at this moment and not at this time. The meeting is adjourned.”
The district sent out a news release Wednesday saying the board needs more time to make sure the budget closes the achievement gap, equips classrooms and addresses mental health concerns.
