SFO Gate Explorer program allows visitors past security without a boarding pass
Apr 29, 2026
A new program grants people access to the secure side of San Francisco International Airport without a boarding pass.
The SFO Gate Explorer program provides the opportunity for pre-approved visitors to escort loved ones to their gate, greet loved ones upon arrival, dine and shop at various establ
ishments as well as enjoy art and museum exhibitions inside security.
Those interested in the program must apply online and wait for approval. Here’s how it works.
Step 1: Apply online
Apply online for an SFO Gate Explorer pass up to 30 days in advance of your visit. Same-day applications are accepted.
Be prepared to provide your full legal name, date of birth and sex, exactly as they appear on your government-issued ID. Double check that your information is correct.
Those under the age of 18 are permitted to participate in the program, but they must complete an application along with an adult. Approved minors have to stay with their approved adult during their visit.

Once approved, bring your digital or printed SFO Gate Explorer pass to the SFO security checkpoint of your choice. Present your pass and TSA-approved photo ID to a TSA officer. Proceed through the security checkpoint like you would as a ticketed passenger.
