Orangeburg, S.C. (WOLO)– South Carolina State University President Alexander Conyers released a statement about the upcoming commencement cermony. Conyers says they are going in a different direction and Lt. Governor Pamela Evette will no longer be the keynote speaker. The Lieutenant Governor was asked to deliver the school’s upcoming commencement address back in December but this week students protested the decision demanding President Alexander Conyers un-invite Evette. In a statement released Wednesday evening, Conyers writes that the decision to invite Evette was based on her record as a business leader. Conyers thanked Evette for accepting his invitation but added, “The safety and well-being of our students, families, faculty, staff and guests will always guide our decisions. Commencement should remain a moment of celebration focused on our graduates and their achievements, and we are committed to ensuring an environment that reflects that purpose.” Students tell us the lieutenant governor’s stance against DEI does not align with the HBCU’s beliefs and moral code. However in a press conference Wednesday morning, the lieutenant governor said she believed students have been misinformed by their professors.
