Man facing murder charges months after 33yearold shot, killed in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- More than eight months after an early-morning shooting left a 33-year-old Richmond man dead, the person accused of killing him is facing murder charges.
Just after 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, officers with the Richmond Police Department were called to the 3400 bloc
k of Chamberlayne Avenue for report of a person shot.
When they arrived, they went inside a home and found 33-year-old Gilberto DeJesus, III of Richmond. He had been shot.
DeJesus was taken to a local hospital, where he died the next day.

Over eight months later, on Tuesday, April 28, police announced that 39-year-old James Winston of Richmond has been charged in connection with DeJesus' death.
He faces four charges: murder, discharge of a firearm in an occupied building, the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Winston is currently in custody in Henrico County on unrelated charges. Per the Henrico County Police Division, those charges are in connection with a string of larcenies from vehicles in December 2025. They include larceny, intentional destruction of property and conspiracy to commit credit card fraud, among others.
According to online court records, Winston was previously convicted within Henrico's courts of felony malicious wounding. Said case dates back to 2011.
