I280/Wolfe Road interchange improvement project in Cupertino aims to ease congestion
Apr 28, 2026
A major project aimed at easing congestion along a busy South Bay commute corridor is underway.
Officials on Tuesday broke ground on a $124 million improvement project at the Interstate 280 and Wolfe Road interchange near Apple Park in Cupertino.
The project is designed to reduce traffic conge
stion and improve safety for drivers entering and exiting the freeway.
When completed, likely in late 2029, the project will bring significant changes to the Wolfe Road bridge over Interstate 280. Crews plan to demolish the north side of the bridge and build a new structure with three lanes in each direction. Additional lanes will also be added to on- and off-ramps at Wolfe Road.
VTA officials said the project will also include protected bike lanes and wider sidewalks for pedestrians.
The project is funded through VTA’s 2016 Measure B sales tax, along with local contributions, including $4 million from Apple to the city of Cupertino.
Not everyone supports the plan. Some residents say the money would be better spent on public transit rather than expanding roadways.
Construction is expected to last about three years. Officials said there will be daily lane closures, but they will be minimal, and the freeway will not be fully shut down. Most construction work will take place overnight to minimize disruptions.
