Recovery efforts are continuing in Runaway Bay after an EF-2 tornado struck Saturday night, leaving widespread destruction and at least one person dead. Wise County Sheriff Cary Mellema provided an up-close look at the hardest-hit neighborhood off County Road 3701, where nearly every home suffere d damage. Officials say 51-year-old Juan Madrid was killed when powerful winds lifted and destroyed a mobile home, leaving only cinder blocks behind. His wife and two children survived but were badly injured. The damage stretched across the neighborhood, with homes ripped apart and roofs torn away. Rick Wanner said his house was severely damaged after the storm lifted the roof and exposed the interior to the elements, just two weeks after he put it up for sale. Despite his own losses, Wanner spent Monday helping neighbors secure their homes and check on their safety. He described the emotional toll of the storm. “It’s so sad and our prayers are with everyone,” Wanner said. “Of course, we’re happy that we’re safe. But it’s sad that anybody got hurt or loses their life.” Wanner said neighbors have been working together to recover. “We’ve been going from house to house working as teams together and just doing what we can to secure things and make sure everybody is safe,” Wanner said. Sheriff Mellema said the devastation is difficult to process, even for those accustomed to seeing storm damage. “It’s pretty devastating. You see this stuff on TV, other places, but when you’re up and close personal like this, it’s pretty devastating,” Mellema said. He also pointed to the strong community response in the aftermath of the storm. “That’s Wise County. They’re gonna come out here and they’re gonna help in any way shape or form. You’ve got people walking around here offering any help,” Mellema said. This story was originally reported for broadcast by NBC DFW.
