It was a day of remembrance in San Francisco on Sunday, as community members gathered to honor the lives lost in the Armenian genocide. The event took place at the base of the cross on top of the city’s highest peak, Mount Davidson. 38 Armenian groups came together to purchase the cross 11 year s ago, and have been holding this event ever since. Event organizers say it’s critical to remember the 1.5 million lives lost during the genocide, which took place between 1915 and 1923. “We are here today in order to commemorate what happened and honor the survivors as well as victims. Because it’s important that we continue to talk about this moment in history for our present and the future. Because if history like this is ignored and denied, then it’s most likely to happen again to anyone anywhere,” Event Mistress of Ceremonies Ella Sogomonian said.
