Recently released body camera footage shows how an Antioch police officer survived being trapped inside a getaway car with a robbery suspect traveling at high speeds. The footage shows Officer Travis Donaldson repeatedly ordering the suspect to stop the car before eventually shooting him in the l eg, leading to the man’s arrest. The incident, described as a life-or-death situation for Donaldson, happened Feb. 20. In surveillance video released by the Antioch Police Department, a masked suspect and two accomplices are seen driving a vehicle backward into a local FoodMaxx store in an apparent attempt to commit a robbery. When Donaldson arrived with his gun drawn, the car reversed and forced him into the passenger side of the vehicle. Police said the driver, identified as 23-year-old Dominick DeSouza, then sped off, allegedly threatening to crash the car unless the officer got out. Donaldson repeatedly told DeSouza to stop while pointing a gun at him. DeSouza told the officer he had a family and at one point offered to slow down so the officer could jump out. The officer said he would not shoot if DeSouza stopped the car, but the suspect continued driving. At one point, Donaldson tried to put the car in neutral and also struck DeSouza’s arm with his firearm in an attempt to stop him. About two and a half minutes into the high-speed drive, Donaldson shot DeSouza in the leg. DeSouza then exited the vehicle and ran before being taken into custody. He was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. DeSouza has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges, including the alleged kidnapping of a police officer. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. The Antioch Police Department is investigating the incident in coordination with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. ...read more read less
