ANTIOCH, Calif. (KRON) -- A chaotic scene unfolded inside a car in Antioch earlier this year as a suspect in an armed robbery allegedly kidnapped a police officer and threatened to crash the vehicle, body camera video released Thursday shows. The officer shot the driver in the leg to end the two-and
-a-half-minute high-speed confrontation.

The incident started just after 5 a.m. on Feb. 20 when the Antioch Police Department responded to an armed robbery in progress at the FoodMaxx grocery store, located at 4500 Lone Tree Way. A store employee reported that one of the three men who entered the store after ramming through the front doors with a car was armed with a gun.
Officers arrived on scene in three minutes, police said, and saw the suspect driver, identified as 23-year-old Dominick DeSouza, getting back into his car. Officer Armstrong stopped his patrol car in front of DeSouza’s car, and DeSouza accelerated into it, the video shows.

Officer Donaldson, who was on foot, reached into DeSouza’s car from the front passenger side to get hold of him as DeSouza reversed back into the store and again accelerated forward. The second impact with the patrol vehicle moved it out of the way, and DeSouza drove away with Officer Donaldson still inside the car.
The two other suspects fled the grocery store on foot while Officer Armstrong is heard on body camera video yelling commands at them to get down.

DeSouza drove erratically and at high speeds for approximately 2 miles with Officer Donaldson trapped inside the car, police said. Throughout the incident, Donaldson repeatedly commands DeSouza to stop, while DeSouza tells Donaldson to get out of the car. At one point, DeSouza is heard telling Donaldson that he “ain’t going to jail.”
Officer Donaldson: “Hey, stop. Stop.”DeSouza: “I’m going to crash, bro.”Donaldson: “Don’t. It’s not worth it.”DeSouza: “It is worth it, bro. I got family, bro.”Donaldson: “Alright, talk. Talk to me. Talk to me. Talk to me. Talk to me. Talk to me.”
Officer Donaldson attempted to put the car’s shifter into neutral, police said. DeSouza is heard saying, “That’s not going to work.” Donaldson is then seen in the body camera video pointing his service handgun at DeSouza and threatening to shoot him if he did not stop.

One minute and 13 seconds after Donaldson first tells DeSouza that he will shoot if he does not stop, he fires one shot into DeSouza’s leg.
“Officer Donaldson intentionally shot DeSouza in the leg to reduce the likelihood of a fatality to DeSouza, himself, and members of the community,” Antioch PD said.
Shortly after the shooting, the car crashed into a parked vehicle in a residential neighborhood and DeSouza fled on foot, according to police. DeSouza was found hiding in bushes by responding officers shortly after running and was taken into custody.
DeSouza was charged with kidnapping, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon upon a peace officer, two counts of burglary, grand theft and unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle.
Police said DeSouza suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting. Officer Donaldson sustained minor injuries.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the police shooting.
