BRUNSWICK COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 41-year-old Freeman man was shot and taken into custody after a disturbance call escalated into an alleged axe assault in Brunswick County. At about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the area of School Hous e Drive near Reedy Creek Road for a disturbance or harassment-related situation call. While responding to the call, deputies said information was updated reporting that a male was possibly shot. Authorities said the man who was shot was 41-year-old Michael Louis Stith of Freeman, who was wanted for felonious assault by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. He had reportedly run away before the deputies' arrival and was found to be combative and uncooperative. Stith was provided medical treatment and taken by ambulance to the hospital and then later flown by LifeVac to Chippenham Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He remains in custody at this time. "Investigators responded and collected evidence and gathered witness statements," authorities said. "All other parties were cooperative and consistent throughout the investigation. Preliminary investigation identifies that this incident began with a harassment/trespassing situation that escalated." Stith was identified as the primary aggressor of the incident as he threatened and assaulted numerous individuals verbally, physically and eventually with an axe. ...read more read less
