(KRON) -- The Fairfield Police Department is putting eyes in the sky. A new drone program will help police officers with a variety of emergencies. The Fairfield Police Department introduced its new Drones as part of its First Responder program to the public on Tuesday. It is the first of its kin d and is designed to revolutionize emergency response, enhance situational awareness, and support safer outcomes. Officer Michelle Belyea says the drones will help officers understand what risks are at a scene and what resources are needed. Having real-time aerial awareness can help us make better decisions from the very beginning,” said Belyea. The drones are powered by advanced technology from Flock Safety. Spokesperson for the company, Paris Lewbel, explained the drone’s speed. “Drones can launch from rooftop docks within seconds and respond to incidents with in as little as 90 seconds,” said Lewbel. “Giving officers and first responders a live, real-time view of what’s happening before officers even arrive on scene.” Flock cameras in other cities, such as San Francisco, are being used as license plate readers. Lewbel says that’s not what the drones are for in Fairfield. “Drones camera points at the horizon while it’s going to a call and points down once it arrives on a scene, and every flight is logged in a public transparency portal, so there’s a clear record of how this technology is being used,” said Lewbel. The drones will be powered from the Fairfield Police Department’s Real-Time Information Center. Sgt. Derek Fok oversees the center’s operations and says the eyes in the sky aren’t meant to replace officers, but rather enhance the work they’re already doing. The department’s retention period for keeping the drone videos is 30 days, and Fok says the footage does not get shared with federal agencies. ...read more read less
