Man arrested for vandalizing San Jose bakery, attacking customer
Apr 21, 2026
A man suspected of vandalizing a San Jose bakery and assaulting a customer late last year has been arrested, police announced Tuesday.
Eugene Morgan, 44, of San Jose was arrested in Arkansas in connection with the Dec. 17, 2025, vandalism and assault at Peters’ Bakery, according to police. He w
as extradited back to the Bay Area earlier this month and subsequently charged.
After walking into the bakery located on the 3100 block of Alum Rock Avenue, Morgan tried to sell products to the business, but an employee declined. That’s when Morgan allegedly “became enraged” and started to damage items inside the bakery, police said. He also allegedly assaulted a customer who tried to record the incident, leaving her with minor injuries.
Morgan took off before officers arrived, according to police, but detectives later identified him as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant.
On March 3, authorities in Arkansas came across Morgan while responding to a trespassing call, police said. Morgan was arrested for both the trespassing incident and his outstanding warrant for the San Jose bakery incident.
Morgan was extradited on April 9 and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for felony vandalism and felony intimidation of a witness with violence, according to police. The district attorney’s office later filed charges for the same crimes.
“Our San José Police Department has proven once again that no matter where you flee, we will find you and hold you accountable for crimes you commit in our city,” SJPD Chief Paul Joseph said in a statement. “Hiding in Arkansas won’t hide the fact you terrorized a resident, a local business, and a community as a whole. You have now returned to face the consequences.”
Peters’ Bakery owner Cap Peters issued the following statement:
“We are deeply relieved to learn of the recent arrest regarding the incident that occurred in our community last December. This situation has always been about much more than a single small business or a specific individual; it is about the fundamental safety of every community member, patron, and neighbor who shares our public spaces. Violence directed at anyone in our community is unacceptable, and everyone deserves to feel secure going about their daily lives.
Once again, the San Jose Police Department has gone above and beyond to protect our community, just as they did following the armed assault here in 2022. We are incredibly grateful for their unwavering dedication, thorough investigation, and the out-of-state coordination that made this arrest possible.
Our deepest hope now is that the District Attorney’s office and the judges will do their part in the next steps of this process. It is crucial for the safety of our entire community that individuals who commit acts of violence are held fully accountable, and that they are not simply released back into the populace.
We thank the community for its continued support and remain committed to fostering a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.”
