Pontchartr
ain Conservancy has received a $1 million grant from Valero to support a multi-year coastal forest restoration effort aimed at rebuilding wetland habitats across the Lake Pontchartrain basin, the organization announced April 21.
The funding will support planning and implementation of a five-year initiative that includes baseline environmental monitoring to evaluate where swamp reforestation is most feasible and effective throughout the estuary. Conservancy officials said the data collection effort is designed to be the most comprehensive of its kind in the region, filling gaps in existing scientific understanding of coastal forest conditions.
Kristi Trail, executive director of Pontchartrain Conservancy, said the support will directly advance critical coastal restoration efforts across the communities we serve, helping to protect and preserve vital habitat and drive environmental sustainability through scientific research, education and advocacy.
The organization plans to restore at least 25 acres of coastal forest each year, with a goal of reaching up to 125 acres over the duration of the Valero-funded program.
Pontchartrain Conservancy, a New Orleans-based nonprofit focused on environmental research, education, and advocacy, said the initiative will also help inform future restoration strategies across coastal Louisiana, a region facing ongoing land loss and wetland degradation.
