Adoption events scheduled as Indianapolis animal shelter prepares to move
Apr 20, 2026
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Animal Care Services is seeking people to help take care of its dogs and cats as the city-county government’s shelter prepares to move to a new facility.
The South Harding Street facility will temporarily close from May 4-10 as it prepares to relocate to
a new shelter.
The new facility at 5001 E. Raymond St. is scheduled to open to the public May 11.
The temporary closure will allow Animal Care Services staff to move to the new facility, said a news release issued Monday from Dawn Olsen, chief communications officer of the Indianapolis Department of Business and Neighborhood Services.
The new shelter was designed to be more than twice the size of the 24,000-square-foot facility at 2600 S. Harding St.
As of Monday, Animal Care Services had 41 cats and 205 dogs, with dog capacity at 98%. With no adoptions planned during the temporary closure, the agency asked the community to adopt or foster animals to reduce the shelter population before May 4.
Animal Care Services will host three adoption events at its Harding Street facility from noon-6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2, and May 3. Adoption fees will be waived, with every animal vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. Light snacks and refreshments will be available, along with information about the new facility.
Anyone who wants to surrender an animal to Animal Care Services can request an appointment at [email protected], or through Request Indy or the Mayor’s Action Center.
