The Executive Board of the South Dakota School Superintendents Association has selected the recipients of its 2026 Superintendent Awards. Superintendents from central South Dakota school earning the awards are Joel Bailey of the Platte-Geddes School District as the Community Leader of the Year and J effrey Clark from the Hitchcock-Tulare School District as the Innovator of the Year. Other award winners are: Outstanding Superintendent Award– Dr. Wayne Kindle of the Yankton School District. Distinguished Service Award– Joel Jorgenson, most recently with the Madison Central School District Rookie of the Year Award– Dr. Jamie Nold of the Sioux Falls School District. All of these individuals will be honored at the annual Superintendent Conference held in July 2026. The 2026 Community Leader of the Year Award recipient is Joel Bailey, Superintendent of the Platte-Geddes School District. Mr. Bailey has served in public education for more than 21 years, including 12 years as superintendent. He is widely respected for his servant leadership and deep investment in the Platte and Geddes communities. Bailey has developed strong partnerships with local organizations, secured grants to expand academic and workforce opportunities, and strengthened district facilities and services. Known for his humility, accessibility, and compassion, Mr. Bailey leads with a people first approach and consistently places students and families at the center of his work. The South Dakota School Superintendents Association proudly recognizes Mr. Joel Bailey as the 2026 Community Leader of the Year Award recipient. The 2026 Innovator of the Year Award recipient is Jeffrey Clark, Superintendent of the Hitchcock-Tulare School District. Mr. Clark has served in public education for more than 25 years, including 16 years as superintendent. He is recognized for implementing innovative approaches to rural education, including a district-wide one-to-one technology initiative, a four-day school week, curriculum alignment, and major facility improvements. Mr. Clark leads the Huron Area Superintendent Group, fostering regional collaboration, and has played a key role in developing shared Career and Technical Education programs that expand opportunities for students across multiple districts. The South Dakota School Superintendents Association proudly recognizes Mr. Jeffrey Clark as the 2026 Innovator of the Year Award recipient. The 2026 Outstanding Superintendent Award recipient is Dr. Wayne Kindle, Superintendent of the Yankton School District. Dr. Kindle has devoted more than 37 years to public education, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. He has served as superintendent of the Yankton School District for the past 13 years. As Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kindle is a thoughtful, student-centered leader whose decisions are consistently grounded in what is best for students. He has expanded innovative learning opportunities through the development of a robust Career and Technical Education program and the establishment of a high-quality early learning center, creating meaningful and lasting impact for students and families. As President of the South Dakota School Superintendents Association, Dr. Kindle has elevated the voice of superintendents across the state and is widely respected for his integrity, professionalism, and mentorship. The South Dakota School Superintendents Association proudly recognizes Dr. Wayne Kindle as the 2026 Outstanding Superintendent Award recipient. The 2026 Distinguished Service Award recipient is Joel Jorgenson. Mr. Jorgenson is retiring in 2026 after 41 years in education, including 28 years as a school superintendent. Throughout his career, he has served South Dakota students, families, and communities with unwavering dedication. Most recently, Mr. Jorgenson served the Madison Central School District, where his leadership strengthened academic programming, expanded student opportunities, and fostered a culture of trust and belonging. Colleagues describe him as a values-driven, student-centered leader and an exceptional mentor whose influence extends far beyond his district. The South Dakota School Superintendents Association proudly recognizes Mr. Joel Jorgenson as the 2026 Distinguished Service Award recipient. The 2026 Rookie of the Year Award recipient is Dr. Jamie Nold, Superintendent of the Sioux Falls School District. Dr. Nold is in his first year as superintendent and brings more than 34 years of experience in public education to the role. In a short time, he has made a significant impact through clear communication, inclusive leadership, and a focused vision centered on attendance, graduation rates, student growth, and academic achievement. Dr. Nold has strengthened relationships with staff, board members, community partners, and state legislators, leading with transparency and steadiness during a challenging time for public education.
