Indy Peace Walk takes place Friday
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Peace Walk on Friday will serve as a kickoff to National Youth Violence Prevention Week, observed this year from April 20 – 24.
The walk begins around 5:30 p.m. Friday, and will meet at the Thomas Taggart Memorial,
1856 Bursdal Pkwy. From there, participants will walk through the Riverside neighborhood to “stand united against violence and uplift the voices of our youth.”
Becca McCracken is co-president of Hoosiers Concerned About Gun Violence, the event’s organizers. She joined News 8 on Wednesday morning alongside Lamar Davis II, the program director for the Mayor’s Youth Council.
Davis and McCracken say this is the walk’s third year, created in hopes of building awareness and understanding around youth violence. But also, as Davis says, help people understand they can “do stuff proactively, instead of reactively, as well.”
Many youth organizations will be in attendance, Davis says, but he hopes more will come to the walk.
“Bring your youth organizations, we’re calling out all youth organizations,” he said. “We’re calling out all parents, grandparents, loved ones – if you have someone that’s not doing anything this summer, bring them out. We’re going to have resources, and we’re going to be kicking off ways that they can be safe, and they get to meet new people.”
McCracken described a few of the resources, saying they want to make sure kids are occupied and having fun while school is out.
“There are options for employment and things like that, but also resources like registering people to vote – we want to make sure that young people know how to be civically engaged,” she said. “We’re really just excited to bring people together because this is a community, and we want to bring a sense of community, and how we can all work together.”
The walk is free, but organizers ask those interested to reserve a spot online if they hope to attend.
