OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- Drivers in Oakland now have to pay for parking on Sundays. The citywide meter enforcement started on April 12 -- in an effort to improve parking spot turnover and better support local businesses. However, not everyone got the memo. The city rolled out Sunday metering ba ck in January -- with the grace period just ending. All along College Avenue, you can see these meters flashing red, and that's because no one is paying their meter. Many drivers are telling us they had no clue that the enforcement started this Sunday. "They are now charging on Sundays...you're kidding me, oh my God," said one driver in Oakland. Confusion and frustration as drivers in Oakland realize Sunday parking is no longer free. "I think it's terrible... absolutely didn't have any notice of it either," said driver Nancy Fraley. (KRON4 Photo) The director of the department of transportation says, on busy Sundays, meters keep cars moving and spots open for people visiting businesses. Most meters range from $1 to $4 per hour. But if you don't pay, you could get a $64 ticket. College Avenue sits right on the border of Berkeley, where Sunday parking is still free. Some worry the change could drive people away. The City of Oakland says the extra revenue will go toward its general fund to support public safety, keeping streets clean, youth services and more. "No one likes to pay for parking, obviously, but the City of Oakland really needs the money," said Oakland resident Karen Ebans. "They are really running short. We want them to be able to hire people for 911 and for policemen, so I'm all for it." Others want the city to hit the brakes. "Please, please, please scrap the Sunday parking fee. People are struggling, so any little thing that can help is needed here," said driver Vincent Mugabo. Driving along oakland on Sunday, we did not see any parking meter enforcement.
