INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A family of four is displaced after a heavy fire caused by repairs to a lawn mower significantly damaged their home on the south side on Indianapolis.
Indianapolis Fire Department dispatched fire fighters just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday night to 3646 Lindbergh Drive, ri
ght off Madison Avenue.
IFD Fire Investigators say that an occupant of the house, who is 19-years-old, was working on the lawn mower inside the garage when gas spilled onto the floor. He and his mother placed kitty litter on the fuel to absorb it, and he continued to work on the mower.
He then used a blowtorch to continue his repairs, but IFD says it’s unclear whether a spark from a sparkplug or the blowtorch started the fire.
“Once ignited the fire took hold and spread quickly,” IFD said in a release.
The man quickly ran into the home to grab a few personal belongings before evacuating the home. Three of the four people who lived in the house were home at the time of the fire.
He sustained slight injuries and was taken to the hospital, along with one female adult who was transported for an unrelated medical condition that was exacerbated by the activity from the fire.
IFD Victims Assistance and Red Cross is working on finding shelter for the family.
“As spring kicks off and with summer fast approaching, the Indianapolis Fire Department would like to remind residents to use care when dealing with gas powered tools or machinery,” IFD said.
“Please take the time to review what you have in your garage or shed and make sure you are storing ignitable fluids, oily rags, and other combustibles safely. It is preferable that repairs, to items such as lawn mowers, are completed outside and away from the structure.”
