Rising fuel costs forces food truck owners to consider price increases

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Food trucks are finding ways to account for the pinch on their budgets as gas prices keep climbing locally amid the conflict in Iran.
One Richmond food truck owner said his weekly gas costs have gone up by more than 40%, and while the business is managing it now, the increas
e will show up on customers' receipts if costs keep rising.
"A big part of food trucking is trucking," said Noah Golfman, owner of Cluck 'n Roll, which has been operating as a food truck for around three years. "It's a lot of repairs, a lot of gas."
Golfman said the truck is out serving three to six days a week, often at events like the RVA Big Market, where they work alongside dozens of other food trucks.
Like most people, Golfman has seen a difference at the pump.
"For us, it used to be $70 to fill up this V8 Titan and the two five-gallon tanks on the back," Golfman said, referring to the white pickup truck he uses to tow the Cluck 'n Roll truck. "Now it's about $100, so it's a $30 difference a week. 50 weeks in a year, it ends up being about $1500 a year."
According to AAA, the average cost of gas in Virginia on Saturday, April 11, was $4.02. While it's down a few cents from earlier in the week, prices are still higher than they've been in years.
For Golfman, raising his menu prices to account for the gas increase is not out of the question, but he's not there yet.
"It's a possibility," Golfman said. "We did raise prices last year when food costs went up significantly, just a little bit. If gas gets to five bucks, that's when we'll start to feel a little bit."
"If it gets to $5.50, $6, that's when you probably see something on the menu change. Probably a dollar across the board," Golfman said. "So our $13 sandwich would go up to 14."
If he does raise prices, Golfman said he is not worried about customers having sticker shock. It's not the first time he's had to make changes to the menu, and their dishes still sold out at Saturday's market in just a few hours.
"I think people... kind of expect it at this point," Golfman said. "When we did it with the food cost last year and went [up] a dollar across the board on the whole menu, maybe one person said something about it out of several hundred people, maybe a couple thousand people. So it doesn't worry me too, too much, no."
