Hoosiers welcome relief at the pump
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Many Hoosiers filling up Wednesday at the pumps told News 8 that they were glad price relief may be coming soon.
Gov. Mike Braun about noon Wednesday said conditions in the Middle East warranted suspending one of the two taxes Indian
a charges on gasoline. The Republican declared a gas tax holiday and suspended Indiana’s sales tax on gasoline, currently 17.2 cents per gallon, for 30 days. The sales tax suspension does not apply to diesel fuel.
Luke Cherry, a student, talked about the gas prices as he filled up. “It’s crazy. I’m mean in the span of two weeks, it doubled. I remember going to my local gas station and it just multiplied by two.”
Another student, Martiann Forbes, said of the tax holiday, “I mean I guess it’s better but I prefer prices to go down in itself.”
A commuter, Tosin Agbaakin, said, “No sales tax is going to help people save money. So, I think its going to be very helpful.”
Another motorist, Scott Adkins, said of the tax holiday, “I haven’t heard anything about it, but any tax break would help. I mean when you fill up from $25 to $30, (to) well over $80, that’s a huge impact.”
Indiana is the second state to suspend its gas tax, following Georgia.
Economics professor Philip Powell from the Indiana University Kelly School of Business said Indiana can provide relief was because of a surplus in tax revenue. “And over the next 30 days, it’s going to take a little bit of time for prices to drop as hopefully the truce holds in the Persian Gulf, so overall this is good for Hoosiers.”
Gas station operators also welcomed the tax holiday. Ginger Curry, the manager of Circle K station, said “A lot of people are upset at the gas prices going up on price. But, they realize they have to have it. They’re doing it but doing it at less amounts. I’ve noticed a lot of people are getting $3, $5, $10 here and there. Hopefully it’ll increase the gas sales. I think they should drop it more. Seriously, they should drop 50-60 cents off. Why not?”
Gas Buddy, which tracks gas prices, listed these regional average prices of a gallon of regular unleaded on Wednesday night: $4.101, Evansville; $4.129, Indianapolis; $4.137, South Bend; $4.157, Fort Wayne; and $4.243, Gary.
