The Summit County Democratic Party nominated Malena Stevens for county clerk at its convention on Tuesday and voted on other county candidates, too. About 140 attendees heard speeches from candidates running at the state and local levels. Precinct delegates voted on the county candidates.  Delegates nominated Malena Stevens to become the county clerk and serve the remainder of the term of office following Eve Furse’s retirement. In Council District 4, John Kucera received strong support from delegates, earning approximately 87 percent of the vote, while Christie Babalis received 13 percent. In District 5, Meredith Reed and Canice Harte were closely matched, with Reed receiving about 55 percent and Harte 45 percent. By a voice vote at the convention, 68 state delegates were nominated and elected. These delegates will represent House districts 4, 23, and 59 at the Utah State Democratic Convention on April 24 and 25, at Jordan High School, in Sandy. If candidates receive a 60% majority of the vote at the state convention, the winner is declared. If less than that margin, they will move on to the primary election.  Under the district-based system, participation in the delegate vote is limited to a small number of precinct representatives, and these results provide an early snapshot of delegate sentiment. All four candidates qualified through the signature process to appear on the June primary ballot. The Democratic Party said it looks forward to a strong primary and remains committed to supporting each of our candidates as they engage voters and share their vision for the future of Summit County.  Voters may select either the Republican or Democratic primary ballot in June. “We encourage residents of Council Districts 4 and 5 — and across Summit County — to participate in the process,” the Democratic Party said.   Voters can check their registration at Vote.Utah.gov.  The post Summit County Democrats nominate Malena Stevens for county clerk  appeared first on Park Record. ...read more read less
