(Courtesy of the City of Lincoln/LTU)LINCOLN–(News Release Apr. 8)–The Railroad Transportation Safety District, Lower Platte South Natural Resources District, and Lincoln Transportation and Utilities invite community members to an open house Thursday, April 23, regarding two projects located in north Lincoln. The free event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the commons area at Lincoln North Star High School, 5801 N. 33rd St. Residents are invited to attend and share comments or questions. Staff will share design and construction information, answer questions, and receive comments. Project consultants and personnel from RTSD, LPSNRD, and LTU will be available. The latest updates and construction timelines will be provided for the following projects: North 33rd Street and Cornhusker Highway Viaduct Improvement Project: This project will enhance the rail corridor between North 27th and North 48th streets by closing two at-grade railroad crossings at 33rd street and at 35th and Adams streets and will construct a new viaduct over the railroad corridor. The viaduct is designed to improve safety by reducing conflicts between trains and other transportation modes, reduce delays at rail crossings, and enhance mobility for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users. The project combines local, state, federal, and railroad funding, including support from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Nebraska Department of Transportation, RTSD, and BNSF Railway. Deadmans Run Flood Reduction Project: This work extends from North 48th Street downstream to Cornhusker Highway and is designed to reduce flood risk and improve safety for nearby property owners. The project is expected to remove approximately 480 homes, businesses, and other structures from the floodplain. Planned improvements include detention basins to hold excess water and channel enhancements to improve flow. The project will be funded jointly by LTU and the LPSNRD.
