1 dead, 1 injured after tanker explodes at Mooresville plant

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Federal investigators are in Mooresville to learn what went wrong when a tanker truck exploded at a beverage manufacturing company Tuesday morning.
The explosion happened around 7:15. It killed one worker and injured another at Carolina Beverage Group.
Authorities say a tank
er truck hauling sodium hydroxide exploded. Soon after the first blow, crews arrived and found another possible threat.
“We were able to get the hazmat crews in located a secondary leak on a stationary nitrogen tank. That leak was contained by our Morrisville hazmat and Statesville hazmat crews,” Chief Shane LaCount from Mooresville Fire said.
NTSB and OSHA are looking into what went wrong.
“We’re now working with plant leadership to, uh, handle the cleanup necessary cleanup material that needs to be handled to, render their site safe again,” Chief LaCount said.
Since a truck was involved, a team of four NTSB investigators will now be working to understand what happened. The findings will likely be released in the next 30-60 days in a preliminary investigation. Authorities still have not released the name of the victim or the person who was injured.
