Miyares urges Virginians to vote ‘No’ to redistricting in New Kent

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Former Republican attorney general Jason Miyares is hitting the campaign trail to speak against Virginia’s proposed redistricting referendum.
Miyares spoke at an event on April 6 in New Kent hosted by Virginia’s main anti-redistricting campaign, Virginians for F
air Maps. He urged Virginians to vote “No,” saying the referendum is not a right versus left issue, but an issue of right versus wrong.
Miyares added that if Virginians approve the proposed constitutional amendment and allow Democrats to implement a new congressional map -- which includes 10 seats that favor Democrats and one that favors a Republican -- many Virginians will be disenfranchised.
“I think it’s wrong to suddenly tell the Shenandoah Valley that they're gonna be stuck into four districts. I think it’s wrong to take away a district in Hampton Roads and give it to Northern Virginia,” Miyares told 8News.

Miyares added that although the amendment would return the power of redrawing Virginia’s congressional districts to a bipartisan commission after the next census, he believes Democrats will take steps to get rid of the commission altogether.
“It’s not temporary, it’s for six years, and no politician that goes to Washington leaves on their own after six years, so this is a permanent restructuring of Virginia maps,” said Miyares.
However, in response, Virginians for Fair Elections, the main pro-redistricting campaign, sent 8News the following statement.
“What the ‘NO’ campaign won’t talk about at their events is who’s funding their effort and how they’re trying to deceive Virginians — with millions from Trump-aligned billionaire Peter Thiel’s network fueling misleading ads targeting voters. The pattern is clear: dark money, deception, and scare tactics — because they know Virginians will reject their agenda if they hear the facts. That’s why we’re focused on making sure voters have the truth and understand what’s at stake. This is the moment to show up — and vote YES.”
Early voting continues through April 18, with election day on April 21.
