A blown insulator was responsible for filling BART’s Embarcadero station with smoke on Sunday – a recurring problem the transit agency has been dealing with since last year. Concerned passengers quickly exited a train and the platform as smoke filled the San Francisco station Sunday night. Sh ort delays followed, but no injuries were reported. It’s at least the third such incident in the past year. According to a recent study by BART, the explosions and smoke incidents keep happening because of dirt that collects on the insulators that line the miles and miles of track on the system. BART crews stopped cleaning them in 2020 but have recently resumed those cleaning efforts with soap and water. There are more than 100,000 insulators in the BART system.
