Elk were moving about Park City in early April. The Park City Police Department received at least three reports of the animals, including along a busy state highway. The reports included: On Thursday, April 2, at 7:14 p.m., an elk herd was seen in the area of S.R. 224 and Meadows Drive. T he police were told it looked “like they are thinking about crossing the road,” according to public police logs. There were upward of 25 animals on the side of the state highway as it passes Aspen Springs, the person told the police. On April 2 at 6:59 a.m., an elk herd was seen “attempting to cross the road” in the area of Aspen Springs Drive. On Wednesday, April 1, at 7:58 p.m., two elk herds were reported along S.R. 224. One of the groups of animals was in the area of the McPolin Farm while the other was just north of that location, the police were told. The person who contacted the police was worried the animals would move toward the state highway. The Police Department regularly receives reports of wildlife sightings. The Park City area provides plentiful habitat for deer, elk and moose. Sightings are frequently reported in the area of the McPolin Farm, a swath of open space owned by the Park City municipal government. Officers who respond to wildlife sightings typically attempt to ensure the safety of the animals, drivers and passersby. Collisions between drivers and wildlife, though, are commonplace.
