At least two people have been arrested, officials said, after officers responding to a break-in at a home in North Philly, early Monday, found the property filled with young people.
According to police, the situation unfolded after officers responded to a property along the 1300 block of North 18
th Street at about 5:09 a.m. on Monday following the report of a break-in.
Upon arriving at the scene, officials said, police observed a juvenile enter the backyard of a property through an opened rear door.
The officers detained the boy, officials said, and then proceeded to enter the property, where they discovered “an additional 12 individuals in the residence — ranging in ages from 14 – 20.”
A neighbor described the chaotic scene at the vacant property, which he said is an apartment building that was recently completed.
“It was a lot of cop cars. It filled the whole street up,” a neighbor said.
A firearm was also discovered at that location, police said.
“Where are the parents at? Like, why they not in the house asleep somewhere? But you know how it is right now. Kids are raising themselves,” the neighbor said.
The neighbor said this isn’t the first time has heard about young people breaking into vacant properties in his neighborhood.
“It was this one and then two houses down, the police came one late night, again, went around back and pulled some kids out of that one,” he said.
He added he believes this is becoming a problem and is concerned the reckless behavior could eventually become dangerous for him and his neighbors.
“I don’t know what’s actually going on, but it’s starting to be a nuisance,” the neighbor said.
At least two people were arrested at the scene but, officials said, more arrests may follow.
An investigation into this incident is ongoing.
