Freeze watch posted for southern NJ Tuesday night as temperatures plunge
Apr 06, 2026
How ’bout this weather?
A Freeze Watch is posted for South Jersey along with parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. The watch goes into effect Tuesday night for forecasted low temperatures in the mid-20s to low-30s Wednesday morning.
Temperatures through much of the tri-state A
rea will be below freezing Wednesday morning, so you may wonder why a freeze watch is not posted for the entire area.
The answer lies in the current state of the growing season in this region.
The area under the freeze watch is well into the growing season by now. Flowers and trees are in bloom, and delicate plants may be at risk of damage or death if they aren’t protected from the cold, either by covering or moving them to a warmer place.
To the north, where temperatures will likely be colder than those in the freeze watch zone, we are not quite to the growing season yet, so the threat to new blooms isn’t as great.
That said, trees and flowers are really starting to come to life around the New York City metro area, so even though a formal freeze watch may not be issued, if you’re concerned about any plants you have, you may want to consider taking precautions to protect them Tuesday night.
Statistically, the average last freeze in New York City comes at the end of March. But it’s very common for it to be as late as the first or second week of April, so Tuesday night’s chill is nothing out of the ordinary.
Wednesday will be the coldest day of the week in the area, with temperatures trending up as we head into the weekend. Right now, the weekend is looking spectacular, and above-normal temperatures are likely through next week.
So, with any luck, this week’s freeze will be the last this spring for New York City!
