Authorities say they arrested the driver who fatally struck a 62-year-old man in San Marcos in February and took off. Carey Faust, 62, was standing behind his parked vehicle in the 100 block of North Pacific Street in San Marcos when a white 2022 Hyundai Venue struck him at about 8:30 p.m. on Feb . 21, officials said. Faust died at the scene; the suspect was last seen on foot heading northbound toward Mission Avenue, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said. On Friday, San Diego sheriff’s deputies said they made an arrest in the case. John Alvarado, a 41-year-old San Marcos resident, was taken into custody, officials said on Friday. He faces one count of felony hit-and-run as well as a charge of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Alvarado, who is being held on $300,000 bail, is scheduled to be arraigned in the Vista courthouse on Monday at 1:30 p.m. Family mourns “The best person they ever met,” his sister, Vicki Faust said. “The most loving, trustworthy, hard-working.” Faust called himself a “mobile American” and didn’t have a roof over his head, but he made a name for himself with the landscape company he owned for more than 35 years. He was parked in front of Prime Storage, where he kept his landscape gear, and was getting something out of his truck when he was struck. “Why they haven’t found him so fast?” Vicki wondered. “They have the vehicle; they must have evidence in that vehicle. He can’t live free because my brother can’t.” Anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information is encouraged to contact the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station at (760) 510-5200. ...read more read less
