Friends and family gathered Thursday at a makeshift memorial to honor a young couple, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby boy, who was killed in a car accident following a police pursuit in Pomona, California.
Jennifer Loera-Zarco, 25, and her 26-year-old boyfriend, Marc Trejo Saldivar,
had just been celebrating Jennifer’s birthday days earlier and were preparing to welcome their baby boy, who was due to arrive on April 20.
Their families say the sudden loss has left them in shock.
“Surreal. Like it doesn’t feel like. I feel like I’m dreaming,” said Jennifer’s sister, Amber Torres. “It’s a bad dream. I’m gonna wake up and she’s gonna be here.”
Jennifer was the youngest of four sisters. Two of them, Amber Torres and Andrea Solorio, described her as loving, caring and full of personality.
“She was smart, intelligent, if you let her tell it, she was the prettiest of all the sisters,” Solorio said.
Her sisters say she was deeply devoted to her family.
“She was so sweet, nice, caring. She was the best aunt, daughter, sister,” Solorio said.
Just weeks before the crash, the family had gathered to celebrate Jennifer’s 25th birthday and the upcoming arrival of her baby.
“We just celebrated her birthday on the 27th, and two weeks before that we threw her a baby shower,” Torres said. “So all we were doing was taking her shopping for last-minute things she didn’t get at the shower.”
According to the Pomona Police Department, officers responded to a domestic violence call shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday near East 10th and South Elm Street.
Police say officers were speaking with one person involved in the incident when the other person returned home in a truck. Authorities identified that person as 31-year-old Marshall Judson.
Police say Judson intentionally drove into a parked patrol vehicle and then fled the scene, leading officers on a two-mile pursuit.
The pursuit ended when Judson crashed into another car at Garey Avenue and County Road.
Marc Trejo Saldivar was driving the car that was struck, with Jennifer Loera-Zarco in the passenger seat. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Family members say the couple had been preparing for their baby’s arrival and planning their future together.
Torres said they had recently been remodeling an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) at Marc’s parents’ home in Santa Ana, where they planned to live after the baby was born.
Marc’s father, Tony Trejo, said his son had an MBA and had been working two jobs to support his growing family.
“It’s unfair and it’s just heartbreaking,” Trejo said. “It’s heartbreaking that the little one didn’t get to take his first breath. He was five days from it. We didn’t have a name.”
Trejo said the tragedy is a reminder to cherish loved ones.
“Tell your loved ones you love them, kiss them, even if they’re going across the street,” he said.
“I just hope that they give him the maximum penalty and we can get the justice for my little sister and Marc and the baby,” Andrea Solorio said.
The family says they are now raising money online to bury Jennifer, Marc and their baby boy side by side.
“Not only two lives were lost last night, it was three,” Torres said. “The baby is a person and was its own being. He was almost here. He was only a couple of weeks from being a part of this family.”
Authorities say Marshall Judson is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, driving without a valid license and felony evasion and vehicular manslaughter.
