A man is facing murder and assault charges after he beat his 90-year-old grandmother to death with a skateboard in their home in Hudson, Massachusetts, on Tuesday.
Devin Dube, 29, is charged with murder and three counts of assault and was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Marlborough District Cour
t. He was ordered held without bail and sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
The court psychologist who evaluated Dube said he suffers from schizophrenia and has a history of failing to take his medication. She said he described having auditory hallucinations, and she has questions about his competency to stand trial.
“This is a senseless tragedy,” Hudson Police Chief Richard DiPerso said, adding that this was not a random act and there is no danger to the public.
Authorities said Hudson police received a 911 call around 3:10 p.m. on Tuesday from a female resident of Munson Street reporting that her brother, identified as Devin Dube, was attacking her with a skateboard. Moments later, police received another call from inside the home reporting an ongoing incident and indicating that another person, the suspect’s grandmother, 90-year-old Elaine Dube, had also been attacked.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Devin Dube lived at the home with his father, sister and grandmother. She said he allegedly attacked his grandmother in the basement apartment where she lived, striking her several times with the skateboard. In court Wednesday, prosecutors said Elaine Dube suffered “significant cranial and facial injuries” in the attack. Following the fatal attack, Devin got into an altercation with his sister and father, hitting them with the skateboard as well.
Ryan described the skateboard that Devin Dube used as “a typical skateboard,” with a wooden platform and metal wheels. She said the skateboard has not yet been found.
Devin Dube fled before police arrived, and about 45 minutes later, police received a third 911 call reporting an individual running around a property on Tower Street, not far from the Munson Street home. Police responded and found Devin hiding in a van on the property. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Ryan said Elaine Dube was rushed to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where she later died. The sister and father were also brought to the hospital for treatment of “facial and upper body injuries” and later released.
Devin Dube had been in contact with Hudson police in the past, Ryan said, but never for anything on this level.
According to court records, in 2020, he tried breaking into a residence while the couple who lived there was sleeping. He threw a planter through the rear glass door and tried to get in, threatening them with a knife. In 2023, Devin Dube violated a restraining order by following the son of that couple from the 2020 incident in his car and was arrested. And in 2024, there was an altercation at a skate park where he was allegedly yelling racial slurs at people and threatening them.
The investigation is ongoing, and is being led by the district attorney’s office, state police assigned to the district attorney’s office and Hudson police.
Dube is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on April 17.
