New FAA restrictions at SFO could see delays on 25% of arriving flights

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco International Airport could soon be seeing delays of up to 30 minutes on a quarter of all arriving flights. That's what an airport spokesperson told KRON4 News on Tuesday following news that the Federal Aviation Administration is imposing new safety restrictions
on landings at SFO.
The new restrictions come as the airport is in the midst of a construction project that will take SFO's two north-south runways out of action for six months. While the runway construction had airport officials anticipating delays on 15% of incoming flights, the new FAA restrictions have bumped that number up to 25%.

"While we were forecasting about 15% of flights being delayed during our runway project, we expect this change will increase the delay potential to approximately 25% of arriving flights experiencing a delay of at least 30 minutes," said SFO Public Information Officer Doug Yakel.
The FAA concurred, with a spokesperson telling KRON4, "San Francisco International Airport (SFO) will experience some flight delays due to a runway repaving project and an FAA safety measure."

The new FAA restrictions prohibit flights from making side-by-side approaches to SFO's parallel east-west runways in clear weather, even when the pilots acknowledge having the other aircraft in sights. It will now require staggered approaches with one aircraft offset from the aircraft on the parallel runway.
Side-by-side approaches in bad weather were never permitted by the FAA in the first place.
Both the FAA and SFO said the two parties were working together to find ways to safely increase the airport's arrival rate.
